This portrait of Kevin Rudd is probably the most complex portrait I have painted so far, I was intensely focused on getting the likeness through whatever means I could. I think the style here reflect my focus on this portrait with blended more refined strokes.
A study of Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard. With this portrait I wanted to get away from the refined style I had been painting with for awhile and get into a thicker painted medium. There wasn’t much detail in this photo so what difference in values I could see I wanted to highlight.
This work was all about getting the skin tones as close as I could. Another more refined painting than my more recent oil paintings where I was concentrating on technique rather than the artistic expression. I went straight into a number 4 flat brush for this as I knew I needed to get some thin line work as I was going to have no background behind her I wanted to define the outline of her face as best I could. You can see in the finished work there is hardly any of the original line work showing as I got it almost spot on in the first sketch.
